The movie, however, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a popular book aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the state in practice.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. His harder version led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on city centers, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. He is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
