Democratic officials expressed anger after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in military or security positions.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and defend this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out commands that break the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Furious Reply

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader published a joint announcement denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no place in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous loyalty and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.

Officials' Strong Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.

"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who care for this United States and took an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "All citizens must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."

Additional Governmental Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the execution of elected officials."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in American history."
