A spending plan that would conclude the most extended government shutdown in US history is reaching the House of Representatives for a crucial vote on Wednesday.

On day 43 of the political impasse, lawmakers are coming back to Washington to vote on whether to approve a Senate package that would finance government departments for the next eight weeks.

Majority party officials expressed confidence the funding measure would be approved by the House of Representatives, notwithstanding their tight margin. But top Democrats vowed to oppose it.

House Democratic minority leader the New York representative of the Empire State pledged to oppose the bill.

"We firmly object as the minority party to this careless majority action to persist in increasing the expensive lifestyle on everyday Americans," he told CNN.

Jeffries has shown irritation with Senate Democrats who aligned with the majority party on Monday night to pass the budget proposal.

Major Points

A key condition of the opposition during the shutdown has been that Republicans attach to the budget legislation a measure to prolong government subsidies that make health insurance more affordable for a significant population.

But the majority party maintained solidarity and declined to compromise, accepting solely allow a decision before year-end on the insurance support, an option they presented weeks ago.

And there is no guarantee that provision will even pass the Senate, while the presiding officer has still not guaranteed a ballot for the subsidies in the House.

Political Dynamics

The House leader has kept the House out of session for 53 days to pile pressure on the upper chamber minority to settle the impasse.

Ahead of the decisive decision he will formally induct Arizona congresswoman-elect the Democratic candidate, a Democrat who gained office in a vacancy vote in September.

Once she has taken the oath of office, the GOP advantage in the House will be whittled down to five votes – 219 to 214.

That indicates Johnson can only afford to lose a couple of majority votes on any party-line vote.

The budget puts the federal government on path to maintain increasing about nearly two trillion dollars (£1.4tn) a year to its $38tn in government obligations.

But even if they do break ranks, the House Speaker could possibly secure approval with the help of centrist opposition members, such as the centrist lawmaker of the Pine Tree State or Henry Cuellar of his constituency.

Neither party appears to have emerged politically unscathed from this political standoff.

Surveys show the public thinks Republicans shoulder slightly more of the blame, while the opposition were bitterly split by the political maneuvering.

And once the shutdown is over, budget writers have merely eight weeks to prevent the subsequent closure.

Federal appropriations would then be scheduled to end on the end of next month.
