The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
