The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the conditions of the plan.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- After-conflict administration of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of Israelis prefer the war to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who rests his head on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated another two victims had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
