Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt late in the first half during an accidental contact with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the big man, and he immediately went down to the court holding his knee.

The veteran player, that tops the league this season in boards and assists, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before sustaining the injury.

The player is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday to assess the seriousness of the problem.

"Immediately, he knew there was a problem," said Nuggets coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player that is injured, that's tough to see, most notably somebody as talented as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Obviously, currently, I'm more concerned about him as a person and the frustration of facing an event like that."
