Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
