Vince Zampella, who helped create the immensely successful video game Call of Duty, has died in a car accident in the state of California aged 55.

Zampella's death was verified by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, a game studio that he helped create.

The celebrated video game developer died after his vehicle was involved in a crash and burst into flames on a freeway in the Los Angeles area on Sunday, according to.

"This represents a devastating loss, and our deepest sympathies go to Vince's loved ones, his loved ones, and all those touched by his legacy," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts stated.
